Watching a play ground full of kindergarteners try and understand just why you are making them stand still and quiet while taps plays through the intercom system is a strange and somewhat funny sight. They don't really understand what Remembrance Day is, other than it has to do something with soldiers and poppies. Almost right after the moment of silence some jets flew over the school in formation. The kids were awed and amazed.
In elementary school, they used to make us not only say the pledge but also sing the national anthem...We sang it and had no idea what it meant. I can remember thinking that "Rocket's Red Glare" was "Rupert's red hair" and was positive that our President must have red hair and be named Rupert...always.
